//Preface//
Currently, there are three different brands of pen cleaners in Jia Si’s store.
- One is the French classic JHerbin (renamed Herbin)
- One is Monteverde in the United States
- One is ROHRER & KLINGNER (R&K) from Germany
Today, let’s briefly compare the usage experience and insights of the two. If you want to see the conclusion, just scroll to the bottom.
The most common reasons for using pen detergent are "water can't clean it" or "no time to rinse it slowly", so cleaning ability is the first priority, and the other factors will be discussed in terms of usage and convenience during the process. No wait.
//Official recommended usage //
Monteverde is a flushing fluid. The official recommended time to use Monteverde is to use clean water to flush away most of the ink, then use this product to flush the pen, and finally use clean water to flush away the flushing fluid.
Herbin's cleaning solution is closer to the soaking solution. Officials recommend that after rinsing with plenty of water, remove the pen tip and other parts, soak the parts for about five minutes, and then rinse them with clean water.
R&K is a concentrated cleaning solution. There is a small ink collector at the mouth of the bottle. Turn the whole bottle upside down and then turn it upside down to fill the ink collector with concentrated liquid. You can use a dropper to absorb it and put a few drops into a bottle filled with clean water. Dilute the liquid in the cup, or insert the pen tip into the ink collector to absorb the concentrated liquid. The dilution ratio is about 1 (liquid): 100 (water), you can use it at your own discretion.
It is recommended to use diluent for general cleaning. For pens with severe residual ink, dry ink, or ink stuck in gaps, use concentrated solution directly.
//Actual usage process//
For the M brand, most inks can be washed clean, but I still think it would be a bit wasteful to use it directly as water to rinse. However, if you add water and use it as a soaking liquid, the cleaning power will be a bit weak, and a large amount of washing will be required. The smell when using the pen is really unbearable. It bites my hand a bit and is very uncomfortable.
Compared with the H brand, the Cartridge-style soaking liquid can be directly stuck on the European standard pen and soaked. It can dissolve the old dirt in many old pens very conveniently; another advantage is that you can use a small beaker to pour a little bit. After diluting it with water, you can put the pen tip and tongue in to soak, and then you can leave it to do other things. How long you need to soak depends on the dyeing condition. If it is difficult to dissolve, you can soak it longer, but because it is a soaking liquid, it has a stronger cleaning power. Relatively lemony scent.
RK uses a combination of the principles of the above two cleaning fluids, so it has the cleanest cleaning results and will not feel biting or smelly. It can also be soaked and diluted. It is currently our most recommended cleaning product.
Ink that is difficult to wash can also be used with a soft toothbrush to help clean it!
//Simple conclusion of the comparison//
- Monteverde: It is cheaper in terms of ml. It smells bad and bites your hands a bit. Its cleaning power is slightly inferior. According to the official recommended steps, the dosage is very large and it is consumed very quickly.
- Herbin: The capacity is small, but the amount of soaking liquid is relatively economical. It has a lemon scent. It does not bite your hands when you use it. After washing the pen, your hands are still smooth and tender (exciting). It has great cleaning power. It's better than Monteverde, and it's easy to rinse off. (Relatively speaking, some M cards that cannot be washed out were washed away by JH!)
- R&K: The capacity is medium, but it has the largest capacity after dilution. It also has a slight lemon fragrance and has the best cleaning power. It can be diluted by yourself and is the most convenient to use. It is specially designed for waterproof sketching ink!
